Have A Different Perspective

I know for a fact that 99.9 percent of the world loves food. Who doesn't? And most of you like to travel. Or if you don't like to travel, you enjoy watching people travel. Well so do I. I would definitely describe myself as a dedicated foodie and traveler. I love talking about food, looking at food, smelling food, making food, taking photographs of food and of course; I LOVE to eat it. Well, I will admit that I just spent the entire morning, and half of the afternoon being a couch potato, watching a show entitled "The Getaway." The name is a little deceiving and you don't exactly think this television series would be about food... but oh my goodness, I am hooked.
This tantalizing show airs on the Esquire Network from the mind of Anthony Bourdain. The Getaway, a new original series exploring the world's greatest cities through the eyes of a vast variety cast of travel-loving celebrities who know them like the back of their hands. This show is exhilarating, entertaining, spontaneous and of course; delicious. I literally couldn't peel my eyes away from the television if I had tried.
The show is very diverse, and so incredibly fun and interesting to watch. By the time the show is over, you would have learned about 10 interesting facts about that specific city that you didn't know beforehand. The show really gives you a completely different perspective and outlook on the country that you live in and of course countries that you have never even visited before. It gives you different angles on food, culture, people and so much more.
As I was watching the show, it forced me to compare and contrast the way Americans eat and the way people in other countries eat. America today makes me so incredibly disappointed within the topic of food mainly because they don't appreciate it the way that other countries do. I am however setting aside America's wonderful and talented chefs. The chefs that we have in our country today are nothing but appreciative of food. I mean hey, I spent my whole life growing up with a chef in my own home so in my opinion, I think I care and respect for all different types of food around the world very deeply. I'm always looking for reasons to expand my taste palette and try something new. I believe that's why I adore traveling so much, because people in other countries adulate their food so much more differently than we do. Even different regions of the United States are so vastly different. Mainly the types of food that I am talking about are fast-food restaurant's and diners in particular. Restaurant's such as those have got the idea of food all wrong in my opinion, but as a whole, the United States has an immense melting pot of cuisines to offer. Food in general is by far my favorite part whenever I go anywhere in this world.
In most places of the U.S., your portions are larger. I don't know if it's just me, but it seems like everywhere I turn... something is deep-fried. The average Anerican simply doesnt view food as a work of art. The "quality" of food should be the idea that people look at. We need to rip a page out of our respected chefs' book in the U.S. and around the world and learn to discard the saying, "more is better."
I am going to single out one city in particular from a list of episodes that I was entertained by today; Paris. Also, because I'm just a tad bit French obsessed. But aside from the fact that Parisians do love their creamy cheeses, elegant wines, and of course you can't forget the soft and flaky pastries. Statistics have shown that obesity rates in France are three times lower than for people in the U.S. Reason for this is mainly because the average American does not know how to savor their food like the French. The average American engorges themselves and eats entirely way too much. Now you cannot forget the most important ingredient surrounded by the art of French cooking. Butter, butter, butter. And Parisians guiltlessly eat what they want to eat, they just simply eat smaller portions.  And if you really think about it, life is guaranteed to be so much more satisfying without all of that fried food in your diet, and excessive amounts of well, anything. So from this moment on, I am going to eat more like the French-less is more. Who's with me?
But on a closing note and turning back to the show. It really does interest me on how different countries have their own habits about eating, and pretty much anything else you can think of. That is what the show "The Getaway" gives to you as a viewer. It is so eclectic and intriguing; you immediately receive a little slice of the world that you didn't know was there.
